The people of St Andrew’s Church first became involved in raising money for Azul Wasi in June 2006 when Chris and Mary Pountain gave a talk to the congregation at one of the church’s Gift Days.

Their daughter Fran spent a year volunteering in Cusco as part of her degree course and worked at the drop-in centre, Colibrí, with Alcides and Tiffany. Fran told her family about Alcides’ vision to build a house in the countryside away from the city for children who might otherwise be living on the street. She described the problems the children faced and how the volunteers at Colibrí decided to work together to turn Alcides’ vision into reality.

Since 2006 the people of St Andrew’s helped raise money to support the project. The clergy and PCC of the church have given their support and continue to help Alcides develop Azul Wasi, and make a difference in the lives of the children.

Over the last two years, money has been raised at various events and contributions from generous individuals.

During 2008, the people of St Andrew’s have held several fundraising events. 13 members of the church went on a sponsored cycle ride around the surrounding villages. In October, a Salsa Evening took place in the church hall, with live music by the Salsa band which Fran sings with. In October the children of the church served coffee and cakes after the service. Being aware of the difficulties at the moment caused by spiralling food prices, the decision was made to send the collection made this year at the Harvest Service to Azul Wasi.

Just recently one of the children from St Andrew’s Youth Choir, when asked what she would like for a birthday present, said that she would like to give the money to Azul Wasi!

Sancton Wood School and Cambridge International School have also contributed through dressing-up days and cake sales. The children learnt about the project in their assemblies during a presentation with photos of the project.

The people of St Andrew’s Church are very pleased to have been involved in this fantastic project right from the start. It is always good to see the photos that Alcides sends and to hear news of the children.
